Squishy by Ommin202 Squishy by Ommin202
[link]
I combined two scenes, the one the quote comes from and one from about 15 seconds later. This video doesn't show that part - it's the only one with decent quality I could find - but the jellyfish come back for revenge!

Done for this contest: [link] however, I think I broke a couple of the rules so it won't be allowed, but you can still enter! I generally do contests to get my creativity flowing so it was well worth it!

I was playing Pokémon Emerald and I caught a Tentacool and nicknamed him Squishy.

Because of this, or on your own? Either way, so awesome!

It was inspired by Finding Nemo, before I saw this crossover.

That's cool, but there IS a pink jellyfish pokemon you could've used. Frillish, and/or Jellicent.

Oh, their shiiinies are pink, sneaky.
That's alright, I prefer Tentacool/cruel anyways, since I'm old school :)

Actually, those aren't their shinies. See, those pokemon are separated by gender; the blue ones are male, and the pink ones are female.

Even sneakier! I just started playing B+W so I haven't run into them yet, unfortunately

hi there! i like it for sure (it's an adorable concept and i lol'd a bit), but in order to add it to my contest I do have to ask a few things
1) is it your original artwork? (it kind of looks copy/pasted from the games themselves so i have to ask)
2) if it isn't, is it a free base to use? if not, do you at least have permission to use it?

after you answer those, if you ARE given permission to use the bases, then you'll also need to credit them. Once all of that's done, I can add it to the list of entries, but as it is now, I can't accept it as it breaks not only my contest rules, but also the rules of DA as well as the artist's code >.<

No, you're very right, it's the exact game sprites - that's why I figured it wasn't allowed.

I have to disagree with you about the rules of DA and the Artist's Code bit, but only out of personal integrity for myself, not to try to get into the contest :P The rules of DA only disallow trying to sell it; legally, using the game sprites is just as bad as doing fan art. And as for the Artist's Code, artist's also have a duty to create the art their fans want using the characters and not just let them languish.

That's just my little bit though :) Thanks for taking the time to look at it, I gracefully unsubmit it, and wish you good luck with the contest!

I'm sorry I cannot accept it! I hope you'll make another piece for it that I can <3

The reason I said it's against the rules of DA and the artists' code wasn't at all meant to insult you. It's just that using an exact piece of artwork is called art theft. Had you created the sprites, even if they were fanart, it'd be original art. Fanart and art theft are not actually the same because when you draw fanart, you still own the artwork it'self, but you do not own the characters, which is why you can't sell fanart, but it's still allowed to be posted, does that make sense?
TL;DR: the actual artist owns the artwork unless they give up the right, while the creator of the character/environment/etc. owns the intellectual rights.

DA might allow it but legally it's still not allowed. Fanart, that is. You can draw fanart and keep it at your house, but if you post it online, you're drawing a copywritten character and you need the original artist's consent or else it's just as illegal. DA, and most copyright holders, don't enforce fanart - or even direct copying as long as there is suitable modifcations made - as long as you're not doing it for sale.

I probably won't make another piece because I can't draw; only design/write. Even if I could draw I'd likely use the original sprites for my work since people recognize it more easily.

You're not allowed to sell it, because the characters are creatively owned by the creator, but fanart, your own art, is allowed to be drawn and shown off as long as you're not trying to sell it, due to creative commons. As long as you state that you do not own the characters and you do not try to sell them you're golden.

The point of this contest is to grow as whatever artist you may be. If you think you can't draw sprites, give it a shot, you may find you're much better at it than you think. Also, writing IS allowed, and i'd love to see a design-based entry ^_^ everything is allowed as long as it's your original artwork <3

Creative Commons is a type of license that the creators of a piece can use, which specifically allows fanart or other things like that. No major corporation would use Creative Commons - it would wreck their ability to profit from the art. CC is not something you can apply to your own artwork and say "now this is legal!"
Everyone is only okay because most corporations don't have the time/manpower to send out C&D letters to everyone who makes fanart. If you try to make a profit you get their attention though, that's for sure.

I'm exactly as bad as I imagine I am, sadly. I might do another piece but it's doubtful, this was really for my own practice anyway.

If that's the case, then why do companies encourage fanart? Go to any company with characters at all, and look at their website, they will always highlight fanart with either it's own page or a link to a fanart page, online games especially. If it was not legal, why would they do that?
